Why We're Starting Over on Purpose

October 04, 2026

A year into running anything, you stop examining the parts you set up first. They're just “how it works” now, not choices you made. Decisions that happened once and got locked in by everything built on top of them since.

We hit that mark this month. It's been a year since we took over Social Fox, and going back through everything we built from the very beginning felt like the right way to mark it. Not because anything's broken. Because a year is enough time for an assumption to stop feeling like an assumption.

You don't defend your foundations because they're right. You defend them because they're yours.

Owners early in a business build their foundations fast, out of necessity: who they help, what they offer, what gets priority. It's guesswork dressed up as strategy, and that's fine, that's how a first foundation gets built.

Owners who've been running the business for a while stop treating those early choices as guesses. They start treating them as facts. Not because the evidence changed. Because familiarity did. The offer that made sense in year one keeps getting renewed in year two, not on its own merits, but because changing it now would mean admitting the original version wasn't finished either.

That's the shift a real foundations check requires: separating “this is still right” from “this is just what we've always done.”

Why this actually works

The concept here is the endowment effect: people consistently value something more once they own it, simply because they own it, not because it's actually worth more than an equivalent alternative they don't own yet.

It shows up with foundations the same way it shows up with anything else. The audience you chose, the offer you built, the priorities you set, once they're yours, once you've invested time and money and identity into them, they start to feel more correct than they actually are. Letting go of a foundation you built feels like a loss, even when the foundation itself is the thing holding you back.

In business terms, the fact that you built it isn't evidence that it's still right.

We're spending this next season checking our own foundations on purpose instead of defending them on instinct, and helping Social Fox clients do the same with theirs. If you want to talk through which of your own foundations might be due for an honest look, grab time for a free Quick Chat with us.
